Similarity Involving Attributes and Relations : Judgments of Similarity and Difference Are Not Inverses
نویسندگان
چکیده
Conventional wisdom and previous research suggest that similarity judgments and difference judgments are inverses of one another. An exception to this rule arises when both relational similarity and attributional similarity are considered . When presented with choices that are relationally or attributionally similar to a standard, human subjects tend to pick the relationally similar choice as more similar to the standard and as more different from the standard. These results not only reinforce the general distinction between attributes and relations but also show that attributes and relations are dynamically distinct in the processes that give rise to similarity and difference judgments . The question of what makes things seem alike or seem different is fundamental to cognition. Models of learning imply that the learning of a task is facilitated if it is similar to another task that is already part of a learner's repertoire (Thorndike, 1966) . Stimulus generalization occurs as a function of how similar the new stimulus is to the conditioned stimulus (Pavlov, 1927 ; Shepard, 1987) . In memory models it has been assumed that X reminds people of Y if it is similar to Y (Kolodner, 1984 ; Schank, 1982), and in theories of categorization it has been assumed that classification of new examples is based on their similarity to known examples or to a category prototype (Medin & Smith, 1984 ; Oden, 1987) . In short, similarity is a central concept in cognitive science . Correspondence and reprint requests to : Douglas L. Relational similarity and the nonindependence of features in similarity judgments.
Four experiments examined the hypothesis that simple attributional features and relational features operate differently in the determination of similarity judgments. Forced choice similarity judgments ("Is X or Y more similar to Z?") and similarity rating tasks demonstrate that making the same featural change in two geometric stimuli unequally affects their judged similarity to a third stimulus...
متن کاملIndividual differences in the perception of similarity and difference.
Thematically related concepts like coffee and milk are judged to be more similar than thematically unrelated concepts like coffee and lemonade. We investigated whether thematic relations exert a small effect that occurs consistently across participants (i.e., a generalized model), or a large effect that occurs inconsistently across participants (i.e., an individualized model). We also examined ...
متن کاملTOPOLOGICAL SIMILARITY OF L-RELATIONS
$L$-fuzzy rough sets are extensions of the classical rough sets by relaxing theequivalence relations to $L$-relations. The topological structures induced by$L$-fuzzy rough sets have opened up the way for applications of topological factsand methods in granular computing. In this paper, we firstly prove thateach arbitrary $L$-relation can generate an Alexandrov $L$-topology.Based on this fact, w...
متن کاملAn English-Chinese Cross-lingual Word Semantic Similarity Measure Exploring Attributes and Relations
Word semantic similarity measuring is a fundamental issue to many NLP applications and the globalization has made an urgent request for cross-lingual word similarity measure. This paper proposed a word semantic similarity measure which is able to work in cross-lingual scenarios. Basically, a concept can be defined by a set of attributes. The basic idea of this work is to compute the similarity ...
متن کاملA procedure for Web Service Selection Using WS-Policy Semantic Matching
In general, Policy-based approaches play an important role in the management of web services, for instance, in the choice of semantic web service and quality of services (QoS) in particular. The present research work illustrates a procedure for the web service selection among functionality similar web services based on WS-Policy semantic matching. In this study, the procedure of WS-Policy publi...
